The isolating switch amplifier

An isolating switch amplifier or isolating amplifier prevents electrical conduction between two circuits that are still supposed to exchange power or signals among each other. This measurement amplifier uses so-called galvanic separation. For example, an explosion hazard area can be safely shielded from a non-explosion hazard area. It is also referred to as an isolation amplifier. This is not necessarily a voltage amplification. It can lead to a very desired signal amplification.

How do isolating switch amplifiers work?

They are switches with a transmitting and a receiving part. The transmitter and the receiver operate on different potentials, the transmitter on the measurement potential. While the supply of electricity is galvanically separated using a transformer, the transmission is insulated electrically. The required galvanic separation of the entire system with the desired signal transmission can be achieved using different coupling methods.

In inductive coupling, the electromagnetic induction for the signal transmission is used as a counter-induction. A transformer consisting of two spools is used.
In capacitive coupling, the mutual electrical capacity (compatibility) is used to transmit the signal.

The optoelectronic coupling via an optical coupler uses the transmission of DC signals via so-called light conduction. A transmitting diode conducts to a receiving transistor.
Isolating amplifiers with different couplings are processed in finished construction elements.

Where is an isolating switch amplifier used?

Isolating switch amplifiers are well-suited for use to achieve galvanic separation in safety-relevant areas while transmitting control signals at the same time, for example in medical installations.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of isolating switch amplifiers?

Isolating switch amplifier reliably ensure the desired galvanic separation. However, this is only the case if the right component is used. Since this functionality is important in some hazardous areas, a few things need to be kept in mind when selecting a suitable construction element:

Along with other electrical specifications, the respective supply voltages and operating frequencies play an important role in the functionality of the component. They can be found in the product description. Additional different equipment characteristics and specifications can also be significant in selecting the correct component. For example, sometimes the isolating switch amplifier should be remotely configurable with the help of some software, because the installation environment prohibits direct contact to the construction element. A pre-selection should also take into account the size and superstructure width of the respective device.
